What happens if my boss wants me to apply for a job I have no interest in?

I work in an accounting firm as a bookkeeper/payroll administrator, and my boss sells securities as well. He wants me to apply as an associate with the securities company. I have no interest in this job he wants me to apply for, which includes a background check and some very personal questions that I would rather not answer because they aren’t relevent to my current job. So how do I tell him that I have no interest in this job without him getting all pissy about it?

I’d tell him how flattered I am that a person of his calibre regards me as the kind of person that would excell at something so intricate and advanced but te truth is I wouldnt do well and between payroll/bookeeper duties and the securities position, I’d be straining myself to the max and I am the kinf of perosn that has to give everyting I do 150% and doing both would mean that one of the 2 would lack.

    Just run game on ‘em.

Keep in mind that ONLY he stands to gain from this career move.

“I have thought it over and thought it over…and it just isn’t for me. I think it’s great that you do this on the side and everything but like I said, it’s not for me!”

He may see this as a promotion and to turn it down might mean lack of opportunity and raises in the future. Are you sure you aren’t just hesitating because you are scared of change?

There’s no reason why he should be upset if you decide not to pursue this position other than, as Alletery pointed out, he’ll lose out on whatever bonus he’d get for singing you up. Thank him for considering you, then tell him that it’s just not something you’re interested in. If he persists, or if he retaliates against you in any way for turning him down, talk to either his boss or HR – these actions would need to be addressed by the company.

Since you have no control over how your boss may or may not react to your answer, you need to make OK whatever the reaction is. That said, your boss obviously considers you a talented and valuable employee by offering you this opportunity. Your boss thinks you would be successful doing this. However, since this is something you don’t want to do, take the advice of the other people posting here to politely tell your boss no thank you. If your boss really values you that should be the end of it. If not, remember you were looking for a job when you found this one. You can easily find another even better position.
