If you are looking for something that involes close customer contact such as retail sales, in person is probably the best route. But for most professional positions, no matter what company, online or mail is the way to apply. If you stopped by most HR departments without an appt, you would only be speaking with a recptionist who would take your resume and tell you call or apply online. Its just not usually acceptable to show up to a higher level position unnanounced and most likely will be a waste of your time. And it was alot easier to look up your reference numbers, previous employers addresses/numbers, and anything they asked that you didnt know off the top of your head. Sitting at home putting in your application is so much easier and for your convience if you cant make it during their business hours. Some companies insist on only applying online, but it doesn't hurt to actually go in and see the Manager or Personnel Department. It shows initiative and that you are keen.
